The Vanderbilt Commodore Orchestra (VCO) is Vanderbilt’s largest extracurricular orchestra on campus and is composed of a wide range of musicians in the Vanderbilt community. The majority of the performers in the orchestra are undergraduates with an interest in classical music and performance, but whose primary major is not in the Blair School of Music. Since its inception in 2012, this organization has provided rewarding experiences and the opportunity to perform challenging orchestral repertoire to countless Vanderbilt students.
Carlos Meyers was selected to serve as the primary conductor of the ensemble for the 2021-2022 academic year, and has led the group in weekly rehearsals since the beginning of the semester. On this program, Carlos will be conducting Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 and Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 (for more information on Danzón No. 2, consider reading Carlos’ blog post about the piece). Also featured on the concert will be Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slav and the Intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni’s opera Cavalleria rusticana under the direction of VCO’s assistant conductor, Leon Kobayashi.
Due to Vanderbilt’s ongoing precautions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Blair School of Music performances are only open to Vanderbilt associated students and staff. All concerts, however, are live streamed for the public and a link to that webpage can be found here. On the day of the concert, the feed will be available under “Ingram Hall.”
